AFC Ajax vs. NAC Breda

Image (c) Ajax Foto Side. This was a special weekend. Not only with my first driving lessons, but also my very first visit to a soccer game! My employer Chess gave us tickets for the match. Together with my colleague's Joris, Pascal and Sabine I went to AFC Ajax vs. NAC Breda.

We planned to go to this match a long time ago, and it was really a happy coincidence that this was the match in which Ajax became Dutch national champion. Ajax won with 2-0 of NAC.

I've never been a big soccer fan, but I enjoyed yesterday's match a lot. It's a very impressive experience to be in a stadium with so many people shouting and waving banners.

We didn't go to the celebrations at the Leidseplein.

Driving on the Cultuurweg

Guus in the car.Today I had my first driving lessons!

My father and I went to the Cultuurweg, a quiet dead-end street, just outside Middenmeer. There was no traffic there at all, but it's a longer road so it was an excellent spot to start driving.

Years ago I once drove my parents' car a bit, on a parking lot in Wieringerwerf with my mother, but that's about all the experience I had with driving a car. I never really needed a driving license, but now I want to start taking driving lessons.

Today was really fun. First I learned how to start the car. Then I drove a bit in first gear, and learned how to use the gear-lever to get to the 2nd and 3rd gear. The highest speed I drove with today was 50 km/hour, but I can assure you that that felt really quick. I trained a lot on turning the car around, and later I also started to "park" the car on various locations. It's really fun to drive a car, I found out.

I'm not sure exactly when and how but somewhere in the next few weeks I want to either start taking regular driving lessons or perhaps take a full-time course to get it done quickly.

In Middenmeer

I'm in Middenmeer today; I arrived here straight after work yesterday evening. We are the two of us; my mother is still at Gran Canaria.

It's always very relaxing here, and we've been talking all evening. In the morning I woke up around 11:00 o'clock... it's great to sleep in!

Bevrijdingspop

Sponge bob balloon.Tonight I celebrated a very happy day, and I went to Bevrijdingspop with Jelly. That was fun; it was really busy and the weather was nice.

The performance of Beth Hart, an American lady singer, was really good.

The liberation day festival is at the other side of the city, but the music is so loud that I can hear it (far away) when I open the window.

Haarlem

To Bevrijdingspop

The Bevrijdingspop festival started at 12:00 o'clock this afternoon. In the Kruisstraat, the street next to my work, there is a constant stream of people coming from Centraal Station to the park where the festival is.

I was going with Hugo, a colleague, for a cup of coffee and took a picture.

To Bevrijdingspop 2004.

4th and 5th May

Church with Dutch national flag.Today is May 5th, which marks the liberation of the Netherlands at the end of World War II. The celebrations today follow the national remembrance day (May 4th) when the people are commemorated who have fallen in the war and other wars. Yesterday I went to the ceremony at the Dreef in Haarlem.

I always enjoy today, it's a great idea to be able to celebrate freedom. The national flag is out on official buildings, I took some pictures on my way to work.

Presentation Co-Design

Sheets. This afternoon I gave a presentation about my graduation project. There were about 15 colleague's.

It was very nice to tell about the things I've researched and found out, but also difficult. How to describe six months work in 45 minutes? I think it went quite well.

For those of you interested I've made the sheets of the presentation available online.

Card from Spain

Hotel Buenaventura. We received a card from Spain today. My mother and my grandmother are on a holiday at Gran Canaria, a Spanish island 100km from the coast of Morocco. They are having a good time, the weather is pleasant and there's a lot of nice food.

At work I heard some very nice news for two friends.

Tomorrow I'll give a presentation at Chess about my graduation project: A Survey of Co-Design Ideas and Methodologies. It was nice to reread the paper again; I hadn't looked at it for a couple of months.

Deutsch

Edifices

I'm reading an interesting on-line article on the German grammar, written for English-speakers. The introductionary chapter explains a lot of language theory, which is quite useful. It describes the eight possible functions of a word (such as case, gender, voice, mood etc.) and how the function of a word is indicated ('signalled') in English and German.

Compound nouns:

"Germans (like English speakers) connect nouns together to form compound nouns. Examples in English are streetcar, airport, and flowerpot. Germans seem to get carried away with the concept. They keep sticking nouns together until at times they come up with humongous verbal edifices."

Saturday

Teilnahmebescheinigung.I had an easy day today.

After a very nice dinner I'm now watching the finals of Idols. This year I haven't been watching the shows, but yes, I guess Maud would be my favourite.

I received a Teilnahmebescheinigung for the Zaterduitsdag I did last week. Nice gesture.

And of course, today is May 1st: the official expansion of the European Union with ten new member states. It's a great idea Europe is getting together. Hopefully Bulgaria will join the E.U. soon.
