Birthday Jelly

Jelly's flowers.I went to Olga & Jelly this afternoon.

Jelly has a birthday, and I brought her a plant that somebody sold me on the market yesterday: "ah, why don't you take two, it's nice to give as a present".

It was a pleasant afternoon, and we had dinner together -- nice.

Starting development

I've installed most of the tools I need to create a website in MMBase. These include Eclipse, Tomcat and a Tomcat-plugin for Eclipse. This way I can program on my desktop computer, which is easier than on the webserver.

The latest version in CVS of MMBase requires Java 1.4, which doesn't work yet on my server, so I'll stick with an older version of MMBase (1.6.5) for now. I don't think it matters too much for Guus Bosman.nl; the main changes seem to be in multi-media libraries. I'll upgrade later, when OpenBSD has a working JDK 1.4 port.

Computer Saturday

Today is a day for some experimenting with new software for this website. For a long time I wanted to change the program I'm using, and after quite some research I've decided to make a switch to MMBase. This is a Java-based system that is used for many major (Dutch) websites, such as Nu.nl, Overheid.nl, Amsterdam.nl and many broadcasting organisations (Vpro, Netwerk, NOS).

This will be a lot of (fun) work, so it will take a while before you'll see any results. In fact, I'm trying to keep the difference as small as possible; you can see a very first result here.

Chess meeting

The Chess tuning yesterday was nice. We had a meeting in a room above Praag, a bar near the Grote Markt.

After the official part we went downstairs and we had drinks and dinner. We stayed long and around midnight we went to Steels for a while. Had a really fun evening.

Rain

I woke up by the sound of the rain on the roof this morning. The weather is a bit depressing but I'd better get used to it ;) I started really early -- I was here at 8:00 o'clock.

It will be a short working day today. In the afternoon we'll have a Chess meeting, followed by a dinner with everybody to celebrate the success of one of our projects.

Java

New software

I'm looking for new software to use on my server. I like the program I'm using now (Php-Nuke), but it's limited in many aspects and not very secure. Next to that I would like to use a Java based program. It's always good to have experience with different products.

I looked at a number of products so far. First I tried Jahia: very beautiful, very well designed, but too big and slow and not open source. SnipSnap: well designed, quick, nice technology but not a lot of features. Jlscp: too small userbase, too much under development.

Now I'm installing a Dutch product, MMBase. It's a famous name, but the first results aren't very promising; the installation is rather troublesome.

books

Reading

My pile of books to read.I spent the evening reading, including some articles for Chess. Technical subjects I want to know some more about: Hibernate, and especially Java Server Faces. Reading at home is nicer and more effective than at Chess.

There is a very satisfying pile with books on my desk now, all waiting to be read. They are presents for my graduation and books I brought from the States. A very rich feeling.

Starting early

Last week it was hard to get used to the working rythm again. I started late: around 9:30 o'clock, and I didn't really like that.

I promised myself to start work early these days, and today it worked quite well. I suppose that the one hour wintertime adjustment makes it somewhat easier.

plants

Split Rock

Split rock with flower coming out.The other day I got a present from Tibor and Janneke: a small funny plant called Split Rock. It looks like a green stone, its latin name is Pleiospilos Nelii.

I left it on my desk this weekend, and this morning I saw a small flower has grown.
