First bike ride in Durham

Bikes.Today I went for a bike ride, for the first time since we moved to Durham.

I spent an hour cleaning and checking the bike and realized in time that fixing a squeaking break with oil would not be a good idea.

I went to the American Tobacco Trail. The trail is nice, but it takes a while to get there as it starts in downtown Durham. All in all I spend about 2,5 hours on the bike. The weather was nice.

In the evening I went to a bike shop near Wholefoods to ask about bicycle maps, but there aren't any for this area. Bicycling is less popular here than in Washington.

Great opportunity to promote bike riding in Durham, sell maps, bikes and trousers.
Start a bike riders club and promote bike trails.

maybe the BPAC could help you?
Use the map at the Durham Parks and Recreation Interactive Trails Map to find a greenway that interests you. Clicking on a location will download a detailed map of that greenway. http://www.ci.durham.nc.us/departments/parks/trails.cfm

Als je hem helemaal uitfietst, kom je vlak bij ons uit ;-) Is wel een eindje trappen dat wel....

Check out the Carolina Tarwheels bicycle club. They should be able to get you started on maps and rides.

The Triangle area has lots of bicycle-friendly areas. Raleigh has miles and miles of greenway, eventually to all be linked together across the city.

If you want to bring your bike to work, I'll ride with you at Lake Johnson Park at lunch or after work.

Thanks for the links jjb and Mark. It seems that there are more trails in the area than I first thought.

I may start bringing my bike to work in the summer (when it stays light longer).

I'll have to start looking for a good way to transport our bikes by car.

2,5 hours? Wow!
With that much practice you can come over for the 'Egmond-pier-Egmond' beach race next year.

And I'll adjust the centerparcs weekend date for you in that case, so you can join us there as well. :-)

Ha, 2,5 hours sounds better than it really was -- I don't bicycle very fast :)

Jij bent een echte waaghals, op de fiets is hier levensgevaarlijk behalve op de fietspaden dan. Om hier te fietsen moet je eerst de fiets in de auto laden en dan naar en bike-trail gaan.

I don't often bicycle on the road. From our house to the start of the bicycle trail I drove most of it on the sidewalk. A bit slower, but a lot safer also.
