World Cup 2010: England - USA

England vs. USAIlana turned 11 years old this week, and today we went to her birthday party. It was an outdoor pool party.

The World Cup game between England and the USA started at 2.30 pm and we watched it from the bar at the pool area. It was an exciting game with a good result for the USA. Even if the goal in the 40th minute was a very lucky one. Ruud Gullit was a commentator for ESPN/ABC. I get the impression that soccer is getting more popular in the US.

In the evening Sasha and I made barbecue at our pool. We cooked chicken, sausage and corn, with plenty of leftovers for during the week.

Big birds before breakfast

The downside of traveling so much is that you always have to think ahead about logistics. It usually works out well but today we ran into a hug snag: no breakfast in house.

On the way to the grocery store I saw a big bird on the road, picking on some roadkill. I stopped to take a picture of the bird, and saw that there were five of them.

Note to self: going out in flips-flops in New Jersey early in the morning is not as nice as it is in North Carolina. It's too cold!

Mud flap

rightMy colleague Jason reattached a mud flap to our Camry today. One of the screws was out -- the flap must have gotten loose recently when a piece of road junk hit it. It was the first time I looked at the underside of the car. Thank you, Jason!

Tomorrow I'm driving back up north to New Jersey -- 450 miles or 725 kilometers.

Crack in windshield

Monday afternoon on the parking lot at work I discovered a crack in the windshield of our car.

It was about 6" to 8" long, and from the marks on the windshield it was clear that small stones or other debris had hit it. This probably happened when we were driving from New Jersey this weekend.

I brought the car to a glass repair shop on Tuesday; it took about an hour.

Somerset, Alexandria, Georgetown, Durham

Sunday was a travel day. In the morning we went for another long walk along the Delaware & Raritan canal. We packed our bags, made some sandwiches and drove from Somerset, NJ to Alexandria, VA. We went to Sasha's place and moved her belongings to her new house for the summer.

Through a friend Sasha had found a new place to stay, much closer to her work. And it's definitely a great location: it's in the middle of Georgetown, a few minutes walking away from M-street.

Monday morning early I drove to Durham. I usually have several conference calls on Monday mornings and taking them from the car worked well. I drove to my office in Raleigh. In the evening I had dinner with Belen, Esteban and Hernan in Durham; that was a great way of coming home to North Carolina.

Four homes in three cities

Things are pretty hectic around here. I'll be in New Jersey for a project for a few more weeks, and Sasha started her internship in Washington DC three weeks ago. This weekend she's moving to another apartment (much closer to work) so right now we have 4 homes that we could sleep in, in 3 different cities and 3 different states.

Obviously, this involves a lot of travel. Yesterday evening we met in Philadelphia where we had dinner in the train station and then went back home to Somerset. Today we spent a few hours arranging tickets and itineraries for the next few weeks, since we both have to travel for work as well. Tomorrow we're leaving for Washington DC, and I'll then continue to Durham, NC. It's fun to travel, and to see so many different places.

In the afternoon we had time to relax and we went for a long walk/run along the Delaware & Raritan canal, which was great. The weather is beautiful here; very sunny. Then we spend the rest of the late afternoon at the pool, and had a lazy barbecue poolside for dinner.

Train to Washington DC

Train station in Trenton, NJ.We drove to the train station in Trenton, the capital of New Jersey, which is about 45 minutes away.

Sasha took the train at 7.00 pm and she'll arrive in DC around 10.00 pm. Ready for a new week after a great 3-day weekend.

Train to Trenton

Sasha took the train from Washington DC to Trenton yesterday, where I picked her up. This weekend is Memorial Day weekend and we're in Somerset, NJ.

It had been 17 days or so since we had dinner at home together, so it was fun to cook and make an elaborate meal together.

plants

Poor plants

Poor plants. In the last 6 months we've traveled quite a lot for work, mostly between North Carolina and New Jersey. The plants in our apartment in Durham have survived quite well, thanks to help from friends.

We bought a few plants for the apartment in New Jersey also, to make it a little more cozy.

They are are tough enough so survive a week without water, although they look like this after that week (a few hours after getting water they will be fine again).

Weekend in DC

On Friday I drove from North Carolina to Washington DC where I'd pick up Sasha in the evening. I saw Sasha's office at the IMF (nice) and we both realized that it would be another 5 hours driving to New Jersey (not so nice).

Since Sasha would have to return to DC on Sunday anyway we decided last-minute to stay the weekend in DC. We returned to The Quincy, a hotel downtown which is unaffordable during the week but has great rates on Friday and Saturday night, and free parking on the street in the weekend.

We went for a long walk on Saturday around the monuments and downtown. We had dinner in Cafe Belga -- an outstanding meal. Sunday we visited the National Gallery of Art and saw the Hendrick Avercamp exhibition. On Sunday night I drove back to Somerset, New Jersey.
