Experimenting

Yesterday evening I implemented the RMI part of the assignment. The goal is to transfer an 'advertisement' (a jpg picture usually) from one computer to another one using RMI, and in another part using RPC.

It's a nice exercise. There are many different technologies involved and altogether I'm writing about 9 programs that all have to work together (in different languages). I hope the next exercise doesn't get any bigger than this though -- it takes a lot of time. I think I'll make it but it's good I took a day off yesterday.

Now I'm integrating yesterday's programs with my "bank server" -- placing advertisements isn't free of course so there are also electronic payments. Some results, just to get an idea:

Guus>> java BankExperiment
Wrote.
Server: HELLO BankServer 1.0
Server: BANK_PAY_RESULT -3

The server (written in C):

Guus>> ./bankd
Database initialized.
Accepted connection from 127.0.0.1:40184.
Received: HELLO Expertiment 1.0
BANK_PAY 123 123 50.50
Scanf: 2; version 1.000000, hello string: BankExperiment
Start of response: 22
------- To execute: BANK_PAY 123 123 50.50
Scanf BANK_PAY: 3.
Tranfer_money(123, 123, 50.500000) = -3
Writing back to client: HELLO BankServer 1.0
BANK_PAY_RESULT -3 (I am pid=26071).
Closed socket 127.0.0.1:40184.

First day off

Today is the first day off at Chess I took. My collegues will likely be surprised to read this because I'm working in the Chess office.

I'm doing the 3rd assignment of Internet Programming. It is quite some work and I'm afraid a weekend wouldn't be enough.

Today is for the Java part of the exercise... it's so much nicer to do than the first part (which had to be written in old-fashioned C).

April 1st

I almost forgot. It's April 1st today.

A very old Internet April 1st joke that is quite funny is RFC 1149 - A Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers. It's from 1990, this year there's RFC 3514: The Security Flag in the IPv4 Header.

Dinner with Daniel

Yesterday we had dinner with Daniel. Unfortunately the dinner started later than we had planned but it was nice to see him again. I guess we are getting old as we only drank a few beers.

Still, this made me feel brave enough to wake up early too, meaning that I left home at 7:45 o'clock. It's very quiet here at Chess.

Wedding Anya and Pleun

Paviljoen De Witte.Yesterday we went to the wedding of Anya and Pleun. They picked a very beautiful place, Paviljoen de Witte in Scheveningen.

When we arrived it was already dark, but the stairs to the Paviljoen where lighted by real fires. The wedding was very pleasant. There was a very good life-band so dancing all evening.

Pleun is an old collegue (Net.Footworks) and most Footworkers were at the party. Last week we also saw each other, to discuss the present for the wedding. It was nice to see everybody being so dressed up. Edo and Relinde brought us home (thanks a lot!) and because of the summertime we went to bed at 4.00 o'clock.

Today I've been programming again. I'm working on the third exercise of Internet Programming.

Haarlem

Funeral

Today was the funeral of Mr. R. Knipper, one of the three volunteer firefighters who died last Sunday when the Koningkerk burned down.

I was at the Grote Markt (went to get a haircut after lunch) and there were many people gathered. A lot of busses too, many firefighter crews came from all over the country.

It was the first time ever that firefighters died in action in Haarlem. Two of my collegues also work for the volunteer firebrigade.

A bug in external program

I've spent the whole morning trying to find out how a specific feature works in a program we're using. It wasn't extremely well documented, so I wasn't even sure if I was trying it the right way...

I tried pretty much everything I could think of, but without result. Really annoying! Then it turns out that there's a bug in this program -- so it wasn't my fault. Installed a new version, and now it works.

Dinner with Joost & Ankie

Yesterday evening we had dinner with Joost and Ankie. It was a very nice evening. Sasha proved once again that Bulgarian cuisine is the best... musaka!

Ankie brought her digital camera, a really good one. She made a very nice picture of the Adriaan at night; I'll put it online later.

Started at 9:15 today.
