Year overviews 2004 & 2005 coming soon

Coming soon! One of the things I like about this website is that it's nice to look back at older articles and the things we did a year ago, or 4 years ago. Life is always changing, and it's great to capture memories.

As in 2002 and 2003, I plan to publish a year overview for 2006 in the first week of January. But of course, the series wouldn't be complete without 2004 and 2005 so I will publish those in December 2006. I've been working on them over the last 4 weeks, and they are getting ready for publication.

The 2004 year overview is planned for 12/18, and the 2005 overview for 12/26.

I've received a lot of nice feedback on the previous year overviews, and I hope you'll enjoy these as well.

Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares at Duke University

Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares at Duke University.Last night we went to see a concert by Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares at Duke University.

We saw the choir earlier this year, in March, in Washington D.C.

There were some differences in the song selection but over-all the show was similar. The acoustics in the Duke performance hall, an old building, where not as good as in the church in D.C. Because we had bought the tickets in August, we had front-row seats which was really nice.

After the show there was a meet-and-greet with the choir member and we talked with the manager of the choir. They are traveling to New York today.

NC license

This morning I went to the DMV to get a new driver's license.

In many states, including North Carolina, new state residents have to apply for that state's driver's license. I went to the DMV office in Durham.

Based on my experience in Virginia where there are usually huge lines I arrived around 7.30 am, and when it opened at 8.00 am I was one of the first people in line. It was a much smaller DMV though, and there were only 20 people or so in line. hings went smoothly and I passed my computer based test.

I had to surrender my Virginia license this morning. I must say that the Virginia license is prettier than the North Carolina one, and I'm not sure that I like my picture very much.

Irina Maria Wende

Irina Maria Wende. Our friends David and Milena were blessed with a baby girl last month: Irina Maria Wende was born on October 29, 2006.

Many congratulations from both of us!

Milena sent us a lot of pictures on Irina's first "1 month birthday", which were very nice to see.

Saving the world, one picture at a time

Jaap de Hoop SchefferA regular reader sent me a great photo series in the Volkskrant. The text is in Dutch but the pictures speak for themselves.

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the Dutch Secretary General, saves the NATO group picture when he realizes that 1 person is missing from the group...

''He'' men and flavored coffee

Coffee notice.A note on the coffee machine:

This office is full of 'he' men.

1. We don't wear perfume.
2. We don't drink "flavored" coffee.

I agree with the author -- flavored coffee is a horrible (American?) idea.

Grande hazelnut vanilla skim latte, anyone?

Start of the Holiday Season

Holiday Season. The holiday season has started.

Last Friday was "Black Friday", the start of the frantic shopping preparations for Christmas, and this is the time that Christmas tree are being sold.

According to the Bulgarian and Dutch traditions it is too early to put a tree. The Dutch Christmas season doesn't start until Sinterklaas is over, on December 5th, and in Bulgaria it is customary to put up the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve.

But when in Rome, do as the Romans, so today we got our tree and the website is in Holiday style.

Homemade bread

A slide of home made bread. This weekend I had time for a cooking experiment, and today I baked two loafs of white bread.

I've made bread before but that was always from a bread-mix package. This was the real deal -- flour, yeast, salt, a little bit of butter and honey (we were out of sugar).

I made a crust with egg yoke, and I made sure to let the bread dry on an (improvised) rack for a few minutes so the bottom crust stayed crispy.

We just had it for lunch and it was delicious. I'm rather proud.

AllesAmerika meeting 2006

WebcamToday is the meetup in the Netherlands of AllesAmerika.com, a forum I frequently read.

Although I couldn't attend the meet up somebody brought a webcam.

I've created a YouTube video (my first) of the MSN stream -- the quality of the connection wasn't very good but it was nice to get an impression.

Map of Haarlem in 1822

Map of Haarlem, 1827.When I was in the Netherlands a couple of weeks ago I bought a reproduction of an old map of Haarlem.

In the Haarlem History Museum I found the Kaart van Nautz. The map by Mr. Nautz dates from 1829 and shows the city as it was in 1822.

We had the poster dry mounted by a shop in Durham's Main Street and the result is great. The map is free of wrinkles and very easy to place on the wall.
