Music in Middenmeer

Music in MiddenmeerThis afternoon Harm and Marijke came to Middenmeer to play music with my parents. There were two clarinets and two saxophones playing, a good combination. We had dinner together, Jaap made a (delicious) Chinese rice table.

Harm and Marijke brought me home to Haarlem (thank you!). When I arrived there was a card from the Juma, congratulating me with my graduation. Very nice.

To Bianca

Yesterday evening I saw Bianca and her family. It had been a long time, so we had a lot to talk. Very nice. She did a research project in Malaysia and China and I saw the pictures.

Talked with my father, went to bed at 01:00 o'clock. I slept very nice again, probably because it's so quiet here. I woke up late and we played two games after breakfast. Mieke won the first game, I won the second one.

Fourth game

It's a very easy day today. In the morning (after sleeping in till 10:30) I started with reading the paper, and then we played Steden & Ridders. In the afternoon I spent some time on my Bulgarian. It has been a long time since I've really studied the language. Especially my knowledge of the grammar is a bit shaky.

Now we've just played the 4th game of this weekend. It was more difficult than the previous one, but I won again, hah. This implies of course that more games will played.

To Middenmeer

Yesterday evening I went to Middenmeer. The traveling is much shorter from Haarlem than it used to be when we lived in Amstelveen or Florijn. On the way from the busstop to my parents' house there were 2 people who greeted me by name.

Of course we played some games: two yesterday, and one just before lunch. I won 3 times! Surprising, because the last few times I played I was always last.

Sasha to the World Bank, again

This morning I went to Schiphol, to say goodbye to Sasha. But for a very nice reason: she's going to the World Bank again.

She'll work there as a Short Term Consultant, starting this Monday. It's a different project than the previous time, this one deals with the effectivity of certain types of financial aid to countries. The work she will do there can probably at the same time count as an internship for her graduation. She'll stay longer than the previous time -- I'll go and visit her in a few weeks.

5 years

In 1998 I went to the States to work in a summercamp and I met a Bulgarian girl there. We fell in love, and after working the summer together we went on holiday to the Niagara Falls.

Much later we tried to determine the date that our relationship "officially" started, and we concluded that it was September 11th. Little could we have known...

Two years ago we were living in Amstelveen, and I went to Net.Footworks in the morning -- obviously with no idea about what would happen that day.

Bulgaria

Bulgarian evening

We had a nice (Bulgarian) evening. Bulgaria's soccer team won with 3-0 of Andorra, and is still first in their group. I think that means that they'll certainly go to Portugal for the European Cup next summer. Let's see if the Dutch team will also play well tonight.

We had shopska, rakia and pursholka... delicious.

Crazy morning

It was quite a crazy morning; I just arrived at Chess. We had to arrange a lot of stuff, which took some time and energy, but things are okay now.

I received a long e-mail from a good friend; feels very nice.

The Last Continent

The Last Continent - Terry Pratchett
'And what exactly will your role be, Archchancellor?' the Dean snarled.
'I have defined your objectives,' said Ridcully. 'It is up to you to consider the options.'
'In that case,' said the Dean, 'I move that we abandon ship.'
'What for?' said the Chair of Indefinite Studies. 'The sharks?'
'That is a secondary problem,' said the Dean.
'That's right,' said Ponder, 'we can always vote to abandon shark.'
The ship lurched suddenly. The Senior Wrangler struck a heroic pose.
'I will save you, Mrs Whitlow!' he cried, and swept her off her feet. Or, at least, made the effort. But the Senior Wrangler was lightly built for a wizard and Mrs Whitlow was a fine figure of a woman and, furthermore, the wizard's grip was limited by the fact that there were very few areas of Mrs Whitlow that he dared actually touch. He did his best with some outlying regions and managed to lift her slightly. All this did was transfer the entire weight of wizard and housekeeper to the Senior Wrangler's quite small feet, which went through the deck like a steel bar.

Bulgaria

Books about Bulgaria

Books about Bulgaria. Two new editions of books about Bulgaria have been released: Bulgaria, the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet Bulgaria. For a long time it was difficult to find good and up-to-date travelguides, but this afternoon I saw these two books in the library. They were both published in 2002 and looked very interesting. The Rough Guide is the 3rd edition, the Lonely Planet the 1st.

At the same time I saw that the archive of the library is now open to the public -- very nice. In the attic there are many more books. There I found an old history book about Bulgaria, written by the famous historican Ilcho Dimitrov. It's from 1979 -- years later Dimitrov became Minister of Education.
