Sense in signage

Inner and Outer.I just read an article about a planned resurfacing of I-40, the road I take to work every day. In April of next year they'll refresh the asphalt between 540 and the Wade Avenue exit. The same article mentions a very sensible change that's being planned for the Raleigh 440 beltway:

"The Beltline job includes plans to remove Inner / Outer Beltline signs that have confused motorists for years. Instead, the Beltline would be divided between east / west I-40, and east / west I-440."

That makes so much sense -- the Inner / Outer Beltline thing never really worked for me.

Here we talk about the innerloop and outerloop of the Beltway. Makes perfect sense to locals, but I'm sure people from out of town do not understand the traffic reports!

Ah yeah, I remember... that was the first highway I ever drove on. I left DC two days after I got my license so I never really had to find my way around.

Apparently this is some logic to the names Inner and Outer Beltline (you have to imagine a clock): http://www.wral.com/traffic/story/3429922/

I "get" the inner and outer thing when I am looking on the map. But when driving on it and am seeing the signs, I got confused more then once. "Am I driving inner or outer now? And which way am I entering? And.... there goes the exit....."
Great news they are going to change it! And if that also fails we still got our "Miep" who shows me the way back home!

indeed, just use the tomtom or whatever his name is...
and i hope you now know the route to work so you don't need the signs... ha ha

Yeah, I can now find my way to work pretty well :)

Not so on my first day in the area:
