To the Fair

I'm leaving for the NC State Fair now, so I'm ready for a long time in traffic and looking for a parking spot. I'll bring a cup of coffee with me in the car.

Yesterday I made a very, very nice discovery here in Durham, later more.

Okay, great. I spilled coffee over my shirt in the car, back home for a new outfit and finally on the way to the Fair.

I would strongly advise against drinking hot beverages, like coffee or tea, in a car, particularly while driving. Same goes for smoking while driving. Hot things falling into your lap suddenly changes your priorities, and in stead of looking at the road, you are trying to cool things down.

A lot of news stating "driver 'lost control' over his/her car" is actually very often read as "spilled hot beverage", "dropped cigarette", or even "dropped phone". In any case, the driver was not paying attention to the driving.

Car accident statistics indicate 98 percent of reported accidents involve a single distracted driver (www.onlinelawyersource.com). I would like to see a worldwide law against drivers which are doing things behind the wheel which are not driving-related. This goes for drinking, eating, talking on the phone, reading the newspaper, checking your schedule, and even reading directions.

Since I have a motorbike I can look into drivers laps, and I actually can see why a car is waving from right to left. You can't imagine what people are doing while driving 120kmh in a large 1500kg car. It is practically "attempted murder".

And then I haven't even started about the junk flying out of the cars when people are finished with their cans or plastic containers. I have to duck or swerve almost once every month to prevent from hitting garbage with my body or head. A small piece of plastic feels like being hit by a baseballbat at 120kmh, beleive me... (yes, even with full motorcycle clothing)

Drive safely!
