Miami 2004
/31: I left to Washington on June 30th. There was a lot of orange decoration at the airport, because of the soccer championship. Orange is the Dutch soccer team's color.
/31: There were supporters travelling to Portugal, where the match between Portugal and the Netherlands would be played in the evening of the 30th.
/31: Together in Miami!

/31: Fourth of July ceremony
/31: With a BBQ.
/31: Julio Iglesias Junior gave a concert near the beach.
/31: Fireworks at the beach.
/31: Fireworks on top of our hotel.
/31: Then, the huge fireworks started. A special ship on the coast had a wonderful fireworks, which we saw from the roof on the hotel.
/31: On Monday we made a trip to the Bay Side, a beautiful harbor area at the bay between Miami and Miami Beach. We had a Cuban lunch there.
/31: We saw some huge trees at the Bay Side; these trees can be become hundreds of years old.
/31: We had a delay at Miami Airport. Luckily enough we were on time to have a great Brazilian dinner together in D.C..
/31: Miami Beach from the plane
/31: From Union Station I took a MARC train to BWI, the airport located between Washington and Baltimore. That trip took about 35 minutes. I was in the 15:30 train and apparently this was the regular train for a large number of passengers, commuting back from work. They knew each other well and told me that they had been travelling the same journey for years. One of them had brought beers and other drinks; they made their journey an enjoyable one.
/31: The New York Post made a mistake on their frontpage the previous day. They announced that Gephard would be running mate of Kerry; later it was officially announced that Edwards would be running on the ticket with Kerrry. Today's frontline was: "Kerry's choice: Democrats pick Edwards as VP candidate (really)".
From the trainstation there was a shuttle bus to the airport. I briefly spoke with three students who came back from Washington from an APAC event, a pro-Israel lobby group.
/31: When I was waiting in line to check-in the luggage I saw some flash lights, and I thought somebody was taking a picture. However, we were told that the flight to Philadelphia was cancelled, and I realized that the flashes were lightning: a big thunderstorm had started. The lady at the check-in counter gave me a coupon and told me to take my bags and take a cab to Philadelpha. I was alone with the driver in the cab -- not a very efficient system as there were many taxis travelling the same way. The weather was very bad, a big storm with a lot of rain.
/31: On our way to "Philly" as the driver called it. Luckily enough there was not a lot of traffic, but due to the weather we couldn't go much faster than 30 miles per hour on large parts of the trip. We left BWI at 16:45 o'clock.
/31: Around 19:15 o'clock we arrived at Philadelphia Airport, or "airaport" as the Ukrainian cab driver called it. I was nice on time to check in for my flight to Amsterdam, which even had an half hour delay. When we were in the plane we were taxi-ing for 45 minutes, as there were many more planes waiting for take off due to the bad weather. Once in the air we had dinner and I quickly fell asleep after that.
