Upgrading from OpenBSD 4.9 to 5.4

This weekend I upgraded OpenBSD on the server. I started at version 4.9 and did several upgrades in a row, to end up at version 5.4. Rebooting the server has always been a bit risky, as it would rarely (or never) come back up by itself and I'd have to call Jaap to reboot. We investigated and found out what happened: the server's BIOS would warn that no mouse was attached ("press F1 to continue"), thereby messing up my remote reboots. Attached an old mouse fixed that.

It's a bit embarrassing that my OS is so out-of-date. 4.9 was released in May 2011. Even 5.4 is not the current version yet -- it was released two years ago. I started upgrading to 5.5 when I realized that with the 64 bit timetracking this would not be a trivial upgrade, and certainly not something to try out late Sunday night.

Day before Thanksgiving

I took the day off on Wednesday and it was great. I wanted to cook some new dishes for Thanksgiving and that was fun. Nora helped me measuring and scooping. For the boys I cooked beets, they really liked that but I had to laundry their clothes afterwards.

I also tried to make gravy but that didn't really work out. I was suspicious of the turkey meat I used so I threw it out and decided to get a ready made container from Whole Foods.

Around 2.00 pm I got them all ready and we went for a walk. We met Sasha at the Metro station and went to the store together, then the playground at Clarendon Commons and then back home. Late in the evening Jonathan and the kids arrived but we were still asleep. A good thing, because at 6.30 am Nora was ready for a new day.

Близанчо

Sometimes we call Adrian бузанчо -- baby with cute cheeks. Nora misunderstood that word and now calls him близанчо, a cute name.

Walk to Georgetown

The weather was great today so we went for another long walk in the afternoon. We drove to Court House where we parked and from there we went down the hill to Rosslyn. We had coffee at the Starbucks in the new Target and then continued over the bridge to Georgetown.

Sinterklaas arrived

This morning Nora and I watched the arrival of Sinterklaas. I brought out the Sinterklaas books and we read a few of them.

We went for a long walk in the afternoon. We checked out Mom's, a new grocery store at the site where Bergman's used to be. It was a great walk.

After dinner Nora put her shoe at the fireplace, together with socks for Leo and Adrian. We sang three songs. A little later she went to Sasha and asked her: "let's look outside!". She remembered from last year that at one point there was a big bag with presents outside. We explained to her that wouldn't be the case tonight.

"De eerste winter was er een zak. Maar niemand klopte! Toen we de deur open deden zagen we niemand".

She was very excited and I was surprised she fell asleep at all.

Oma Groen

Today Oma Groen passed away. She was 89 years old.

We all loved her deeply and she was a wonderful grandmother, both when Ettie & I were little and in later years. When I was born Opa & Oma lived in Velsen-Noord and while I have a few memories from there, they are hazy. Opa was a dentist and after his retirement they moved to a farm in Witteveen, Drenthe. We would stay there often and for long visits. Years later they bought an apartment in Hoogeveen, later Oma moved to Heerenveen. Oma Groen has been a loving presence for me all my life and I'll miss her.

I last saw her in person in the summer of 2014. We frequently talked on the phone and she was always very interested in her great grandchildren. I'm very grateful that she and Nora got a opportunity to meet.
