The Big Roads

Recently I've been reading about the history of Arlington and specifically about traffic calming. I saw reference in a newspaper article to this author, who said that he expects that Arlington will regret its refusal to allow HOT lanes through the county (Arlington preferred the real HOV). Turns out that he wrote a book on highways.

There was even a reference to Arlington in the book:

The job finished, the Turners drove home to the D.C. suburb of Arlington, where they discovered that the widening of the Lee Highway, U.S. 29, was slated to carve so deeply into their corner lot that they would lose a porch [...]"

I read the book through Overdrive, borrowed electronically from the library. It didn't work very well on the phone -- in particular, it would lose it's sync with the laptop and then I'd have to skip many pages so I stopped using the phone. Maybe I need to replace my BlackBerry with an Android phone soon. Anyway, reading on the laptop did allow me to quickly google some things, such as the "General location of national system of interstate highways (1955)" and a map of DC therein, and see photo's of the famous 1957 Chevy.

The book was interesting. It made me understand better what an improvement the highway system is over the old situation.
