An Introduction To American English

As a sort of preparation for my moving to the U.S. I borrowed this nice book from the library. It is a very entertaining read on the differences between American English and British English. Not only on the grammatical differences and differences in vocabulary (which are interesting enough), but also on the cultural differences and different metaphors used in the two languages (such as many sport-based metaphors).

The author, Gunnel Tottie, is a professor in English linguistics, she is British and married to an American so she is a real expert on this matter. What's more: she writes very nicely.

It was interesting to notice that my English is leaning more towards the American than to the British style. This is of course due to my two summers working in the U.S., as well as the fact that Sasha and I speak English and she has had an American language education (most Dutch school tend to teach British).
