Switching languages

It is a lot of fun to see Nora learning to talk. She speaks Dutch with me and Bulgarian with Sasha and switches between the two languages effortlessly. Nora is now at a stage where she'll say "no" to everything -- even if she means "yes". It's very funny when we both ask her a question. To Sasha she'll reply "не!", to me she'll answer "nee!". In both cases she might mean... "yes", haha.

Here are some other words:

- "kaa'" vs "гау гау ки" (кашкавалче) (cheese)
- "коремче" vs "buik" (tummy)
- "brood" vs "хлапче" (bread)
- "морковче" vs "orteltje" (carrot)

41 with Nora

Run went very well. 41 minutes -- pretty good for a run with Nora, a record I believe. The stroller is almost back to normal, but now it has a very small curve to the right.

First run with Nora after the crash

So a week ago we crashed, today was the first time we went for a run together again. We stayed safe and the stroller held up fine. It had a bias towards the right -- need to adjust it.

Wheel fell off

Sunday morning I went for a run with Nora. It was hot but I felt strong and I would have ran a good time were it not for the fact that the stroller's front wheel fell off. Nora was unharmed, thankfully. Her harness kept her in her seat. I'll have to check the wheel before we go out tonight.

Run in the rain with Nora

Sasha left to Boston this afternoon and after Nora woke up and had her snack we went for a run. There were clouds forming already but it took 20 minutes before it started raining. I got pretty wet but Nora stayed dry except for her lower legs, which she found quite interesting.

Tien kleine vingers en tien kleine tenen

In een land ver van hier
kwam een babietje aan.

En een andere baby werd geboren,
hier niet ver vandaan,

En alletwee de babies
die waren verschenen,
Hadden 10 kleine vingers
en 10 kleine tenen!

Er was baby die woonde in de stad,
en baby die een dik dekbed had.

Er was een baby die in de heuvels leefde
en een ander die niesde en beefde.

Er was een kleine baby die droeg altijd een das,
en een andere in een tent die in de Sahara was.

Maar de volgende baby die werd geboren
maakte me bijzonder blij...

die net was verschenen

en drie kleine kusjes, ja het is heus,
op het puntje van haar neus!

Translating "Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes"

We were in Barnes and Noble today and bought two books for Nora. One was a Richard Scarry picture book, the other was: "Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes". We gave this as a baby gift a year ago, and really loved the story and the rhyme. When we read books to Nora we want to do that in Bulgarian and Dutch, and I've translated several American books so far.

Translating it into Dutch was not easy. How to do justice to these iconic lines?

And both of these babies,
as everyone knows,
had ten little fingers
and ten little toes.

I ran several translations by Nora, and while the Dutch word "teentjes" is very cute, she seemed to prefer "tenen". There is actually an official translation, and on Bol.com I saw a few pages of it, but the meaning and the rhythm of the book was modified too much for my taste, even introducing names for the babies in the book which is a distraction.
