World Cup final

Well, that was very disappointing. It was sad to see the Netherlands lose after so many successful games.

On the bright side: we spent part of the weekend together, which was great after two weeks not seeing each other. We watched the game with a large group of Dutch and Spanish supporters in a bar in DC and Mike joined us there (thanks for coming out!). Later I talked with Petra in real live, which was nice.

We walked back past the Embassy of Spain in Georgetown, where we saw a happy crowd of Spanish supporters.

Today I worked remotely, spending most of my day in Starbucks (which now has free WiFi, which is very convenient). I'm back in Durham now.

Driving to the final

On the road.I left early this morning for DC, and I just arrived at Dulles Airport where I'll pick up Sasha. I'm early -- her flight will arrive in an hour.

We'll be watching the final between Spain and the Netherlands in Mackey's Pub in DC.

Sasha in Montreal, Canada

Last week Rome, Italy, then Washington, DC and now Montreal, Canada... Sasha is traveling quite a lot. She is presenting her paper at a conference there tomorrow.

Sunday morning she'll take an early flight back to DC to get ready for the big game! I'll drive up on Sunday morning. Things on my other website are absolutely crazy -- so many new visitors, all looking for a place to watch the final. A lot of fun.

De Wieken: Uruguay - Netherlands

Tuesday I took the afternoon off -- something I seldom do, but then the Netherlands are seldom in the semi-finals. Petra and Diana hosted a great event at their house to watch the game.

It was an entertaining game to watch, with a nerve-wrecking last few minutes.

Yesterday Germany lost 1-0 from Spain in the other semi-final. It would have been cool to see a replay of the 1974 final. With a different end-result, of course.

Fourth of July

Yesterday was Fourth of July, and we spent a nice evening at the American Tobacco Campus.

The weather was great, and we listened to several good bands, drinking 'mate', an Urugayan drink, and 'locopops', a local Durham icecream. Around 9.30 pm there was fireworks in the Durham Bulls stadium.

Sasha and her parents in Rome, Italy

Sasha and her parents are in Rome, Italy, exploring the city together.

Sasha was invited to present her paper at a conference last week, and she flew to Rome on Tuesday. Friday evening after the conference Milan and Nadia arrived from Bulgaria in Rome and they're having a great time together.

It's the first time in Rome for all of them so there is a lot to see; for example they were all day in the Vatican yesterday. Sasha is flying back to Washington tomorrow.

Quarter finals

In the morning I went to Esteban & Belen's house to watch the game between Germany and Argentina. Sadly, Argentina lost. Still, I bought bread at Gugelhupf, a German bakery.

In the afternoon Vladi and Irina came over and we watched Spain-Urugay together.

Celebrating a win

Last night I celebrated the result of the soccer game, and the fact that we're back home, with a small dinner with friends.

Now on to Esteban & Belen's, where I'll watch the game between Germany and Argentina with German and Argentine friends.

Netherlands-Brazil

I watched the game against Brazil at Peter & Jose's in Cary with 15 other members of the Dutch club.

A nice crowd to watch an exciting game with. Very happy with the result, of course.

Update 7/5: more pictures here.

Arrived in Durham

I arrived in Durham a little after 8.00 pm. It's nice to be home again.

It took me a while to unload the car -- moving is a lot of work! If we ever move out of this apartment it would be a major project.

The road I usually take to work, I-40, was closed in both directions in the afternoon due to a suspect package. In the end it turned out to be harmless.
