Cross country running

I never knew what exactly "cross country running" is. Well, tonight I ran a cross country course, and I know now what it is. It was the start of the March series, a weekly run organized by NCRC at the Cary Academy, not too far from my work.

Cross country is "a sport in which runners compete to complete a course over open or rough terrain. The courses used at these events may include grass, mud, woodlands, and water". There was no water in the course we ran, but it was nice varied 5k course with a few small hills and nice trails through the woods behind the Academy. My time was about 27 minutes, based on people finishing just in front of me (I need to get watch battery replaced).

These runs are fun to do, with a friendly group of people. There were about 40 runners tonight.

From cold to hot

Tonight (a Tuesday) I ran for roughly 90 minutes. To Whole Foods, twice the track and back. Felt great.

I tried the same last Sunday (and was hoping to do a golf course also), but had to quit after 60 minutes and walk home. It was too warm! A nice problem to have. Around 80 degrees.

Funny -- a couple of days before that I ran in the snow.

10.7 miles - 11.2 minutes/mile

Today I ran twice at Whole Foods, once the golf course. 2 hours and 27 seconds. 11.2 minutes/mile. That was faster than last week's 9 mile run; I think because it was colder today. I felt great, and I realized after doing the 2nd Whole Foods track that I was in good shape. Today it was around 50 degrees, it was in the low 70s last week.

1:42 - 11.6 minutes/mile

I ran 8.79 miles today; Whole Foods and the golf course. 1:42:15, so 11.6 minutes/mile.

The weather was gorgeous for February with 72 degrees and nice sun. The first time this year that I brought water bottles.

I can feel that I'm pushing myself; it wasn't that the last mile was particularly hard, like before, but I felt that I couldn't run much longer than this. So, it's good that I'm building up slowly towards the half marathon distance. I love running in this weather.

Twice Lake Johnson

On Tuesday and today, Thursday, I ran the 4.5 mile track around Lake Johnson. It's such a great run!

Today was terribly cold, around 32 degrees and I felt cold all day -- until I went out the door and started running. I tried to break the ices of a small stream that I jumped over, by throwing rocks, but I couldn't -- it was pretty thick there (very shallow water). When I was a kid I used to like doing that.

1:24

Last Saturday I ran 1 hr 24 minutes, about 7.5 miles. I ran this track: http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/nc/durham/734457564 but took the usual route home, past the chapel.

Around 11.2 minutes/mile.

1:03

I ran the 1-hour course today (home to Whole Foods, back over campus). 1:03. Felt wonderful. I love this distance. I felt some discomfort in my left hip during the run, and half-way for a minute or so in my right foot. Clearly I'm still getting back in the rhythm.

If I continue training like this I should be in good shape for the Raleigh Rocks Half Marathon in March.

32:09

A great time tonight -- 32:09. And 0 weird feeling in either of my knees (previous two runs I felt a tiny bit). Dare I say it... I'm getting back in shape.

It was very cold, 23 degrees and a chilly wind. Glad I now have a long-sleeve undershirt. 29 something until the traffic light.

33:56

Did the usual course; 33:56. Not bad! Made it again to the traffic light in under 30 minutes; I'm happy with that. Going up the stairs after the run I felt my knee a tiny bit weird, this time my left. It was really tiny, maybe it's the cold. Didn't feel anything during the run. Should sign up for Raleigh Rocks.

Old Reliable Run

Old Reliable Run.Sunday afternoon we ran in the Old Reliable Run in Raleigh, a 10 kilometer race.

It was the first time Sasha ran a 10k race and she did well. I wasn't very happy with my own result, but after a week of no training and a terrible cold I couldn't expect much. It's very nice to be running a race together.
