A run before the long run

This weekend I have my longest run ever scheduled: 14 miles. That's a little under a mile more than the race distance, and it will be the last long run before the race two weeks from tomorrow.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to run it on Saturday or Sunday, but the weather was so good tonight that I really wanted to go for a run. That means my big run will be on Sunday, Easter morning.

The weather is getting really nice and with daylight saving time it still light an hour longer. Total time was 36:12.

Now we're going out for dinner, sushi!

Running in the rain

When I was driving home it started raining, and I realized I'd be running in the rain tonight. I was planning on an easy run and decided to leave my watch home.

I don't think I've run in the full rain before, and it was actually quite nice. It smelled so good! It smelled of Middenmeer.

I could still feel Sunday's run in my legs yesterday. It definitely takes a heavier toll on me to run fast than to run long. I'm not used to running fast, clearly.

Easy weekend, 9 miles

No really long run this weekend, as it's my easy weekend between two long runs of 13 and 14 miles respectively. I ran for 9 miles and deliberately ran faster than usual. I completed the 9 miles in 1:38, which is about 10.9 minutes per mile.

I hit a rough spot where my side was hurting for about 20 minutes after the first hour (maybe because of the gel I ate), but it was a great run. The weather is beautiful. I'm glad I waited until today; I planned to run yesterday but it was pouring.

Tuesday and Thursday runs

After Saturday's long run I felt pretty good. My quads didn't hurt as much as two weeks earlier and I had no major pains.

Tuesday I ran fast. I tried to break 30 minutes to the traffic light but missed it by 45 seconds. Total time was 34:16. Today was slower, around 37:45.

The whole week I've been thinking about signing up for a 5k this Saturday, but tonight I decided against it. It's been a long week (started with a work dinner on Sunday) and I'm pretty tired. Instead, I'll go for a nice relaxing run on Saturday, maybe 6 or 7 miles just for fun.

13 miles - 12.7 minutes/mile

Today was the big day: my first run in the half-marathon distance. Well, it was about 0.1 miles short of the actual 13.1 but close enough. And I made it. It took 2 hours and 44 minutes, and the last 45 minutes were hard, especially starting the second round around the golf course.

I saw a beautiful little red bird, and a heron.

Two weeks in between

For the first time in a long time I didn't have a major run last weekend. This is according to schedule, but my subconscious makes me feel guilty. More to the point, I haven't done as many small runs as I would have liked to since the previous long run. Including today's I've only done 4, but I could have done 5 or 6. Oh well.

Dogs and running

Odie.I was bitten by a dog today. A big one. I'm fine.

The weather today was great. It was really sunny and I went for a run in the late afternoon without my watch, just for fun. After 20 minutes I reached Whole Foods, and there was a girl walking two big dogs. I stopped and warned her: "on your left". She pulled the leashes so I walked past the three of them but one of the leashes wasn't pulled in close enough.

The big gray dog thought I wanted to play a game and cheerfully up jumped against me and bit me in the arm. Luckily the bite isn't too deep, and the doctor said I shouldn't really worry about it, just keep it clean and watch it over the next days.

Three weeks ago a quick sprint helped me escape a furious little dog that was tied to the house with an overly long leash and wanted to bite me in the ankles.

I like dogs but I could do without their attention while running.

Walking on my easy run

Wow! Sunday 11 mile run really made me tired. I went for my bi-daily run yesterday evening, and couldn't even complete it. I walked a few times, because my legs were still really tired. I feel fine today, but I wonder if it's beneficial for me to run so soon again after my long run.

Run for the Roses 2008

Championchip for Run for the Roses, 2008.Today I ran my first race ever, the Run for the Roses in Raleigh, NC. It was great! I am very happy with the result: 26:46, a lot faster than I expected. The adrenaline and the people around made me run faster than usual.

The race started at 2.00 pm so I left home around 12.15 pm. It's a 40 minutes drive to downtown Raleigh, and I was well on time to pick up my Championchip, which is tied to your shoe and enables electronic measuring of the results. The next 20 minutes I sat down, drank some water and enjoyed watching the preparations. I did a 10 minute warm-up, and at 1.50 pm we all lined up in a big group. I'm not sure how many participants there were, but I'd guess at least a 150.

It was very windy but sunny. I'm very glad that I ran the route earlier this week because it made it a lot easier to time my effort. The big difference was of course that now the roads were blocked off. I knew that in the last mile of the race there are two roads after each other uphill, and I was ready for them. On the 1-mile and 2-mile markers there were volunteers yelling out the split times.

First 5k run

28!Tomorrow I'll run my first ever race, the Run for the Roses in Raleigh.

I've been running for a while now, and hope to run a longer race later this year. I want to get some experience with a real race before I do that so I signed up for tomorrow's 5k race.

I just came back from Inside-Out, a runner's store in Cary, where I picked up my race number. The run starts at 2.00 pm tomorrow in downtown Raleigh.

Don't expect any great results since I'm not very fast -- my goal is to run at least within 34 minutes (11 minutes a mile). I'm really looking forward to it... look out for number 28!
