Sasha and her parents in Rome, Italy
Sasha and her parents are in Rome, Italy, exploring the city together.
Sasha was invited to present her paper at a conference last week, and she flew to Rome on Tuesday. Friday evening after the conference Milan and Nadia arrived from Bulgaria in Rome and they’re having a great time together.
It’s the first time in Rome for all of them so there is a lot to see; for example they were all day in the Vatican yesterday. Sasha is flying back to Washington tomorrow.

Summer in Durham = locopops at the American Tobacco Campus with great company and live music. Happy 4th!

“Nur die Tatsachen sind richtig and wichtig for uns. Und gute Stiefel sind selten.” — great book by Erich Maria Remarque.
-- Sun, 07/04/2010 - 3:26pmQuarter finals
In the morning I went to Esteban & Belen’s house to watch the game between Germany and Argentina. Sadly, Argentina lost. Still, I bought bread at Gugelhupf, a German bakery.
In the afternoon Vladi and Irina came over and we watched Spain-Urugay together.

Guus enjoyed watching the game with Vladi and Irina.
-- Sat, 07/03/2010 - 5:06pmCelebrating a win
Last night I celebrated the result of the soccer game, and the fact that we’re back home, with a small dinner with friends.
Now on to Esteban & Belen’s, where I’ll watch the game between Germany and Argentina with German and Argentine friends.
Netherlands-Brazil
I watched the game against Brazil at Peter & Jose’s in Cary with 15 other members of the Dutch club.
A nice crowd to watch an exciting game with. Very happy with the result, of course.
Update 7/5: more pictures here.

Guus: watching the game at Peter and Jose’s. Hup Holland!
-- Fri, 07/02/2010 - 10:00amArrived in Durham
I arrived in Durham a little after 8.00 pm. It’s nice to be home again.
It took me a while to unload the car — moving is a lot of work! If we ever move out of this apartment it would be a major project.
The road I usually take to work, I-40, was closed in both directions in the afternoon due to a suspect package. In the end it turned out to be harmless.
On the road
I left the apartment in Somerset at 9.30 am this morning.
I’m on the road now. The car is pretty full and I have our plants next to me on the passenger seat.
